This policy explains which personal data we process when you visit Globe Explained, why we do it, how long we keep it and what rights you have. We collect as little as we can.
Who is responsible
The controller of your personal data is Globe Explained, the publisher of Globe Explained. You can reach us at [email protected].
When you read the site
Like every website, our servers receive technical information when you open a page: your IP address, the type of browser and device, the page you asked for and the time. We use it to deliver the site, keep it secure and investigate errors or attacks. These server logs are kept only for a limited period.
To know which articles people read, we count page views ourselves. This count uses no cookies, doesn't store your IP address and can't be used to identify you or follow you across websites.
Newsletter
If you subscribe, we store your email address, your preferred language, the topics you chose and the date and version of your consent. We first send you a confirmation email, and you only receive the newsletter once you have confirmed. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link in each email. We then stop sending it straight away and keep only a note that you unsubscribed, so that your address isn't added again by mistake.
When you write to us
If you contact us, we use your name, your email address and your message to reply. We keep the exchange as long as we need it to deal with your request and any follow-up.
Cookies, analytics and advertising
The site uses a few cookies it needs in order to work. With your consent only, we may also use analytics and advertising services from Google, which set their own cookies and process data such as your IP address and identifiers of your device. You make your choice in the banner shown on your first visit and can change it at any time with the "Privacy choices" link at the bottom of the page. You'll find the details in our cookie policy.
Protection against spam and attacks
Some forms, such as the newsletter sign-up, may be protected by a service that checks you're not a robot (Google reCAPTCHA or Cloudflare Turnstile). These services process technical data about your device and browser for that purpose. To protect our administration area, we record the IP address and approximate location of failed sign-in attempts and can block addresses that keep trying. These records are kept for up to 90 days.
Maps
Some articles offer a map from Google Maps. It only loads when you click on it; Google then receives your IP address and may set cookies.
Why we are allowed to process your data
We process data because it is necessary to run and secure the site (our legitimate interest), to send you the newsletter you asked for and to answer your messages, and, for analytics and advertising, because you have given your consent. You can withdraw your consent at any time; this doesn't affect anything done before you withdrew it.
Who receives your data
We don't sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers that help us run the site, such as our hosting provider, our email delivery service and, if you have agreed to it, Google. Some of these providers are located outside the European Economic Area. In that case, the transfer is protected by the safeguards the law requires, such as an adequacy decision of the European Commission or its standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
Server logs are kept for a limited period, and records of failed sign-in attempts for up to 90 days. Newsletter data is kept until you unsubscribe, and correspondence as long as needed to handle your request. Our reading statistics are anonymous and aren't linked to you.
Your rights
You have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. To use these rights, write to [email protected]. You can also lodge a complaint with the data protection authority of the country where you live or work.
Children
Globe Explained is intended for a general audience. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 16.
Changes to this policy
We'll update this policy when our practices change. The date at the bottom of the page shows which version you are reading.
